Why Mediterranean?
The science behind one of the world's healthiest diets — and why it starts with the right olive oil.
The Mediterranean diet is not a trend. It has been eaten by millions of people across southern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East for thousands of years. Today it is one of the most studied dietary patterns in the world — and the evidence is compelling.

The Mediterranean Diet
The Mediterranean diet is characterised by a high intake of vegetables, legumes, fruits, nuts, whole grains, and olive oil; moderate consumption of fish and dairy; and low consumption of red meat and processed foods. It is not just a way of eating — it is a way of living.
Cardiovascular health
The landmark PREDIMED trial — one of the largest dietary intervention studies ever conducted — followed over 7,000 participants at high cardiovascular risk. Those assigned to a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts had approximately 30% fewer major cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke, or cardiovascular death) compared to those on a low-fat diet.[1]
Longevity and healthy ageing
Multiple large-scale studies have associated adherence to the Mediterranean diet with reduced all-cause mortality and longer, healthier lives. The pattern has been linked to lower rates of type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.[1]
Mental health and cognition
Research suggests that people who closely follow a Mediterranean diet have better cognitive function and a lower risk of depression. The combination of antioxidants, healthy fats, and anti-inflammatory compounds appears to benefit both brain structure and function. A 2019 meta-analysis of 41 observational studies found that higher adherence to a healthy diet — with the Mediterranean pattern showing the strongest association — was linked to a significantly reduced risk of depression.[2]
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is the cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet. It is the least processed form of olive oil — produced purely by mechanically pressing the olives, with no heat or chemicals involved. This preserves its full spectrum of nutrients.
Rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats
Around 73% of olive oil is oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid linked to reduced inflammation and favourable effects on genes related to cancer risk.[3] Oleic acid is also highly resistant to oxidation, making olive oil more stable than most vegetable oils when used in cooking.
Powerful antioxidants and polyphenols
Extra virgin olive oil contains significant amounts of polyphenols — including hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein — which are potent antioxidants with well-documented bioavailability in humans.[4] The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has approved a health claim confirming that the polyphenols in olive oil contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress, provided the oil contains at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol per 20 g.[5]
Natural anti-inflammatory properties
A compound in extra virgin olive oil called oleocanthal has been shown to inhibit the same inflammatory enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) as ibuprofen. A 2005 study published in Nature described this effect and suggested that the regular consumption of EVOO may contribute to the low rates of certain inflammatory diseases in Mediterranean populations.[6]
Not all olive oil is the same
The polyphenol content of olive oil depends heavily on variety, growing conditions, harvest time, and production method. Studies measuring phenolic content at successive ripening stages consistently show that early-harvest oils contain significantly higher polyphenol concentrations than late-harvest oils from the same cultivar.[7] This is why the origin and producer behind each bottle matters.
Well suited for cooking
Contrary to a common misconception, EVOO is well suited to hot cooking, including frying. A 2018 study that heated extra virgin olive oil alongside common refined seed oils to temperatures up to 240°C, and through sustained frying at 180°C for six hours, found that EVOO produced the lowest levels of degradation by-products (polar compounds) of all the oils tested — a result attributed to its favourable fatty acid profile and natural antioxidant content, rather than its smoke point, which the study found to be a poor predictor of how an oil performs under heat.[8] Separate research comparing the fumes released while frying with extra virgin olive, olive, and canola oils found that both olive oils consistently produced lower levels of volatile aldehydes — a byproduct of oil breakdown — than canola oil at typical frying temperatures.[9] A comprehensive 2013 review of the scientific literature on cooking with olive oil confirmed this general resilience: at typical frying, roasting, and pan-frying temperatures (up to around 180–190°C), olive oil's performance matches or exceeds that of other vegetable oils, largely thanks to its high monounsaturated fat content working alongside its natural antioxidants. The review also found that EVOO's extra phenolic compounds — responsible for its more intense flavour and some of its specific health claims — degrade quickly once heat is applied, often within the first few frying sessions. For that reason, many of EVOO's specific bioactive advantages are best enjoyed raw, as a finishing oil, while its heat-stable fatty acid profile still makes it a reliable choice for cooking.[10]
